Family Session Style Guide
One of the most common questions I get asked during the planning stages with my clients is "What should we wear?" Advice on what to wear on your photo shoot has changed over the years. No longer are white shirts and jeans on everyone the trend. I am more than happy to discuss your clothing choices, help you narrow down your decision or give you a direction to focus on as well as make sure that your clothing coordinates well with the locations chosen for your photo shoot!
Coordinate Outfits
Now this doesn’t mean everyone has to 100% match with khaki pants or jeans and a white shirt! You want to complement each other’s outfits by choosing colors that work well together. I find that if everyone is wearing the same clothing, people will all tend to blend in together and there won’t be too much pop and life to the images. Coordinate VS. Matching…. let’s not get cheesy!
Solid Colour, Large Prints and Textures!
Solid colours with texture or large patterns look spectacular. If you prefer a dreamy look, choose soft pastel colours, off-whites and soft prints. If you want a more dramatic look choose colours that are bright and bold.
Avoid Small Prints, Lots of Pure White and Brand Logos
Lots of pure white is good to avoid as its difficult to expose for and can distract from people in the images, go for an off-white, grey or cream. Avoiding brand logos is a bit more of a personal preference than a rule but they can detract from a photograph.
Build Layers
A great way to make a wardrobe change achievable in our small session time is to bring a jacket or a coat which we can take off half way through the session.
Skirts vs Pants
Pants are great if you are going for a more casual look, but if you want something a little more dramatic and romantic consider wearing a full length skirt or dress. I love to capture movement, and soft fabrics help if that's something you like too.
Be Comfortable, and let your personality shine!
The most important thing is for everyone to be comfortable. If your favorite outfit breaks all of these rules I don't care. This is about you and your family, and I want to capture the real and beautiful connection that you have. Ladies, if you have not had your hair and makeup done recently I would use this opportunity to treat yo' self!
